The balance between a spirit of exploration and challenge, and the warmth of growing together as a team, is what defines Coto.
In 2026, Coto World launched Coto Japanese Institute, its fully accredited, visa-eligible Japanese-language program. Running an MEXT-approved language institute demands more of everyone behind it: tighter processes, higher standards, and leadership capable of building an institution from the ground up. At the helm of its operations is Chika Iaea.
With a background spanning international education across three countries and years of experience within the International Baccalaureate framework, she oversees everything from day-to-day management to admissions. She, alongside the Coto Institute team, is shaping an environment where learners don’t just study Japanese, but develop the skills and confidence to build real lives and careers in Japan.
Read on to hear her thoughts on what makes the Institute different, and what she’d say to anyone nervous about taking the next step in their Japanese journey.
Welcome, Iaea-san. Tell us a bit about yourself!
My name is Iaea. I spent my early years in Brazil and the United States before coming to Japan. I currently serve as the Head of Operations at Coto Japanese Institute.
What does the role of the Head of Operations look like, exactly?
In this role, I oversee Coto Institute’s overall management while working to create an environment that provides high-quality Japanese-language education. I lead the overall direction of school operations, ensuring everything runs smoothly while supporting the growth of both students and staff. Creating an environment where everyone can develop and thrive is something I value deeply.
What was your career path prior to joining Coto?
Before joining Coto, I worked at an international school, where I was involved in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP), focusing on both academic coordination and management.
What makes Coto Japanese Institute unique is that, unlike traditional language schools, we continuously incorporate new learning approaches and trends. We want to create a space where students from diverse backgrounds can deepen their understanding of Japanese in meaningful ways.
What is the primary purpose of the Coto Institute, and how do we support students towards that goal?
At Coto Japanese Institute, our goal is not just to teach Japanese as a language, but to help students develop it as a tool for their future careers and specialized fields. Through immersive, practical Japanese education, we aim to help students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and build the skills needed to succeed in society.
What specifically drew you to join Coto Institute?
I was strongly drawn to Coto’s vision of creating a society where people from diverse cultural backgrounds can understand Japanese social norms and values, and interact naturally and harmoniously. The idea of not only teaching the language but also helping students understand how Japanese society works and empowering them to live authentically in Japan resonated deeply with me. I felt that my experience could contribute meaningfully to this mission.
What is the most rewarding part of working at Coto Institute?

At Coto, there is a culture of embracing new challenges, and I find it very rewarding to be in an environment where we can go beyond the traditional framework of a language school and continuously improve the learning experience.
Language learning requires persistence, and seeing students grow through their efforts, whether it’s starting a new career in Japan or achieving personal milestones, is incredibly fulfilling. Being part of that journey is what makes this work truly meaningful to me.
How would you describe the work culture at Coto World?
Coto began as a volunteer initiative, and I feel that this origin still shapes the company today. There is a strong sense of contributing to society and continuously evolving. The balance between a spirit of exploration and challenge, and the warmth of growing together as a team, is what defines Coto.
Outside of your professional life, what are your primary interests or hobbies?
I like to stay active throughout the year. I also enjoy traveling, and my current goal is to visit all 47 prefectures in Japan!
What message would you give to a student who is nervous about taking the “next big step” into advanced Japanese studies?
For those who feel connected to Japan, value their identity, and are interested in education, I believe Coto offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to society.
Education can be difficult to change on your own, but as a team, we can make a meaningful impact. If you want to grow while enjoying your work and making a difference, I encourage you to take that step and join us.
